GPS applicability for UAV wind measurement
Original language description
This paper describes a method for measuring meteorological data in the ground layers of the atmosphere, that is cheap and can be used repeatedly in comparison with other standard methods using meteorological balloons. Nowadays, alternative methods are sought and one of the possible methods is to use UAV, equipped with a standard onboard instrumentation including GPS receiver and a flight controller. A drone (UAV) can easily maintain its horizontal position and climb at a constant speed as the wind direction and the wind speed set its tilt. GPS errors have to be evaluated as the GPS onboard system plays an important role in counteracting the wind movement by tilting the UAV, i.e. by redirecting its thrust horizontal (or lateral) component against the wind.
