The Effect of on/off Cycling on the Lifetime of a Light-Emitting Diode Used in a Military Vehicle Design
Original language description
Light emitting diode (LED) is a typical electronic element, which is widely used in LED equipment for both civilian and military purposes. LED working reliability is determined and verified through Accelerated Tests (AT), in which high temperature, thermal cycling, humidity, irradiation, high current, and vibration can be the main causes of LED failures [1]. In many commercial documents giving the technical specification of LEDs, the effect of switching ON/OFF regime on LED lifetime is considered negligible. However, when the testing condition, simulating the actual working condition of LED in military vehicles, is significantly harsher than in the civilian area, the situation has changed. ON/OFF cycling shows a great effect on LED lifetime and must be considered when studying the working reliability of LEDs in military vehicles. This article introduces a study on this effect, as an example, in military vehicles based on Accelerated Test. Based on the results of this paper, some recommendations when using LED equipment in military vehicles are given to limit the effect of ON/OFF cycling and enhance the lifetime of LED.
