Original language description
CFRP sandwich panels with a polymer foam core are used in aerospace structures because of their low density, high flexural stiffness and excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Unfortunately, like all other sandwiches, they are relatively susceptible to manufacturing defects and operational damage and require non-destructive inspection using a suitable method. This paper deals with the experimental evaluation of the applicability of the active pulsed infrared thermography with optical stimulation for the inspection of CFRP foam-core sandwiches. Specimens containing various artificial defects were used for the experiments. The infrared thermographic method has demonstrated, albeit with some limitations, its suitability for defect detection.
