Is high dose of Huperzine A really suitable for pretreatment of higher dose of soman?
Original language description
Huperzine A (Hup A) is a reversible AChE inhibitor that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It is presently approved for human use or is in course of clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This compound has also been successfully tested for pretreatment of organophosphate poisoning. Organophosphate nerve agents are potent irreversible inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase in central and also in peripheral compartment. In this study Hup A in higher dose (500 ?g/kg) was tested as a prophylaxis against high mainly centrally acting nerve agents (soman). According to the obtained results, Hup A in this dose was not able to protect AChE in both peripheral and central compartment against soman. Additive affect of Hup A and soman was found and allanimals died.
