The proteome of Francisella tularensis: methodology and mass spectral analysis for studying one of the most dangerous human pathogens
Original language description
Facultative Gram-negative intracellular bacterium Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis) is a causative agent of the zoonotic disease tularemia. This microbe is widely distributed only in the Northern hemisphere and there are five subspecies of F. tularensis: tularensis (also called F. tularensis type A), novicida, mediaasiatica, holarctica (F. tularensis, type B) and variant of holarctica found in Japan. Of them only F. tularensis subsp. tularensis and subsp. holarctica cause disease in humans. Subtypes holarctica and tularensis differ in their geographic distribution and also in their virulence for humans. Subtype tularensis that prevails in Northern America is considered the most virulent for humans. Minimal infectious dose is less than 10 CFU and amortality of 5 to 6 % in untreated cases of cutaneous disease. In contrast, subtype holarctica predominates in Europe and Asia, and it does not trigger fatal disease. Interest in F. tularensis substantially increased recently due to seri
