    1st Workshop of STO HFM-ET-230 Electromagnetic Signature Mapping of Tactical Medical Equipment

    An international workshop on identifying threats to field medical units from electromagnetic emissions was held in Prague on 22–24 July 2025 as part of a NATO Science and Technology Organization research activity led by the Faculty of Military Health Sciences, University of Defence, with support from the Ministry of Defence’s Military Health Section and the Military Health Agency. The workshop addressed the dual nature of modern medical technologies and sensors, which significantly improve survival chances of wounded personnel in combat and remote areas but also emit electromagnetic signals that can be detected and located by adversaries, posing critical risks to medical staff and patients, as demonstrated in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Discussions focused on risk analysis of electromagnetic emissions from medical devices, possible protection and detection-reduction measures, and experience sharing among NATO experts. The research requires a multidisciplinary expert team, including medical professionals, electromagnetic warfare specialists, and cooperation with civilian research institutions and private industry to develop materials and countermeasures. The project involves the University of Defence’s Faculty of Military Health Sciences and Faculty of Military Technology, the Ministry of Defence’s Military Health Section, DefSec Innovation Hub, Czech Technical University in Prague, Central Military Hospital – Military University Hospital Prague, Military Medicine Centre of Excellence, and representatives of the military medical services of Belgium, Estonia, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The outcomes will contribute to enhanced safety of medical personnel and more effective deployment of technologies in crisis situations.
