INORGANIC ENAMELS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION OF DEPLETED URANIUM
Original language description
The depleted uranium is an indispensable construction material, used in healthcare and arms industry. However, the depleted uranium is highly reactive and, therefore, susceptible for corrosion. Currently for the storage and application the depleted uranium is either alloyed with up to 20% molybdenum or encapsulated in metal containers. We develop the inorganic enamels, based on low melting phosphate glasses for creation of ceramic protection layer on the surface of the ingots and products from depleted uranium. In comparison with commercial TiO2 based enamels, the phosphate glasses require significantly lower temperatures for the sintering, making them applicable for coating the uranium products.
