The Ramschak Chronicle: new findings about the genesis, reception and impacts of the forgery
Original language description
This study deals with the genesis, reception and impact of the so-called Ramschak Chronicle, a forgery on the history of Bohemian Jews created by Marcus Fischer (1783–1858) in Prague at the beginning of the 1820s. It follows on from several earlier studies, the first being Salomon Hugo Lieben’s key assessment of the chronicle, and presents new findings for academic discourse on this forgery – particularly with regard to the history of how the chronicle was received and concerning the biographical details and motivations of its author. On the basis of the findings, it concludes by dealing with the historiographical and literary contexts for a typological comparison between the Ramschak Chronicle and the famous Czech manuscript forgeries of Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora, and for a clarification of their mutual relations.
