Contemporary democracies have to face many challenges such as voter turnout, low interest of citizens in political participation and centre vs. periphery and urban vs. rural cleavages in policy-making. This paper analyses citizens? political participation in rural municipalities in the Czech Republic. Rural areas represent a special field in the political process because political parties are weakly anchored in rural municipalities. In the Czech Republic, we often see an incomplete spectrum of politicalparties in municipalities with less than 2000 inhabitants (90% of all municipalities) and even the parties, which do work in the municipality, have very weak membership. There are usually no political parties active in municipalities with less than 1000inhabitants (80% of all Czech municipalities) and only non-party candidates are active in these municipalities.
