Sociological view of the Czech rural areas
Original language description
The article deals with the sociological view of rural areas and the history of rural sociology in the Czech Republic. Beginnings of rural sociology and its brief history are described here. Rural Sociology in the Czech Republic has developed in several disconnected phases as sociology as a branch of science and a subject taught at universities was banned by the political regimes during the 20th century and allowed again when the political situation relaxed. The definition of the term rural sociology ? sociology of countryside ? is problematic. One unified definition does not exist and the possibility to characterize countryside based on available statistical data is therefore limited. Currently, researches of rural areas focus mainly on their development. The Sociological Laboratory at the University of Life Sciences in Prague is one of the few workplaces in the Czech Republic, which deals with this type of research. In conclusion, the article introduces its research activities.
