The oil sector in libya and its role in economic development
Original language description
Libya is an oil producing country in North Africa. Being the biggest reservoir of oil in Africa and the ninth biggest reservoir in the world, Libya plays an integral role as a member of the Organization of Petroleum Producing Countries (OPEC). It reliesheavily on a single exportable commodity, as the main source of foreign exchange earnings. Due to the developing nature of its economy, and the limited availability of other endogenous resources other than oil and gas, the country relies heavily on the imports of intermediate inputs, as a means of sustaining the people standard living, providing for the various needs for the local market.
