The Definition of Rural Areas in the Czech Republic with Regard to the Policy Objectives

The aim of this article is to determine the rural areas in a way that the definition can be utilized for policy making purposes. The basic requirements on criteria used are simplicity, relevance and stability in time. On the international level the comparability among countries is also important. Exact definition of rurality represents an unsolved problem not only in the Czech Republic (CR). Scholars usually use one or more criteria to describe significant features of rurality. This article focuses on the definition of rural areas in the CR for EU's subsidies policy as a new need to redefine the rurality emerged with next programming period 2014-2020. The main aim is to set the eligible areas for support and to compare number of inhabitants, number ofvillages and acreage among a range of definitions.
