BPMN for displaying the progression of musical harmony and chords -Case study
Original language description
This case study discusses the possibility of using process diagrams to formally describe musical dependencies. As a methodological basis, the authors use an example of the tonic C major and its development in the construction of fifth and seventh chords. The authors show how a process diagram provides a good representation of the known dependencies between the notes of a key. They also present a model of the progression of C major chords through the intervals. The paper discusses the problem of how to complete-i.e., harmonize-a melody so that for each quarter note a harmonic and tonal chord is used for a given period. The authors show that musical relations that are now generally formalized by musical notation can be, and in the case of harmony progression, can be usefully modeled in other forms such as a process diagram.
