Coping with change in Czech Republic
Original language description
This contribution gives an overview of a study into the impacts of the transformatuon process in the Czech Republic from 1990 to 1996. Several perceived sources of stress were investigated: job problems, financial problems, negative events in the person's social network. Various other influencing variables like social support, economic coping, criminal victimization, and sense of internal control were investigated as well. The results show that the inci dence of distress in the Czech population is quitehigh. Women's health appears to be mostly influenced by their work, but the health of men is primarily endangered by unhealthy life styles. Most respondents are satisfied in their work. Workers who moved to the private sector realizedgains in income andreported more stressful events, which in turn affected their mental health. Couples who retired appear to have been able to isolate themselves from some of the stressors even though they live on smaller incomes.
