Helminths parasitizing the Otter (Lutra lutra L.) in the Czech republic
Original language description
The otter (Lutra lutra) belongs in the territory of the Czech Republic to the group of critically endangered mammals. Therefore, the data on the helminthofauna of this host are rare. From these territory, Svatoš (1963) registered in the otter the nematode species Crenosoma vulpis (Dujardin, 1844) only; from the Slovak Republic, Mituch (1972) re- ported the species Filaroides martis (Rudolphi, 1819). Within the whole area of distribution of the otter, 14 spe- cies of helminths, namely 4 digeneans, 2 tapeworms and 8 nematodes were found (Kozlov, 1977). For the evidence of this host's infection by helminths, we analysed 21 faecal samples, collected on the bank reach 500 m long of the channel Adolflca near the village Luž- nice during October 1997. Coprological methods with flo- tation and sedimentation for analyses were used. During this period, the locality was inhabited permanently by 3-4 specimens of the otter. By flotation method, eggs of hel- minths were found in 8 samples (38 %) onl
