Plant uptake of heavy metals from havily polluted soil as a function of soil properties

  • Original language description

Actual danger presented by heavy metals in soil depends mainly on their form, mobility and bioavailability. Litavka River alluvium represents an area with extreme levels of pollution caused by several sources. The aim of this contribution was to assess the effect of different soil factors on the uptake of Cd, Pb and Zn by spontaneous herbs grown on these soils. The level of soil pollution, organic carbon content and soil pH proved to be the principal soil factors controlling heavy metal uptake by plants. The effect of these factors influences mainly metal content in plant roots, while the transfer to plant shoots is more influenced by the metal mobility in plant. The strongest effect of soil properties on plant uptake was found for Zn. This metal was also the most mobile in plants. In the case of Cd and Pb, the effect of soil properties was relatively lower. Lead showed also the lowest mobility in plants.
