The role of rhizosphere processes in sustainable agriculture
Original language description
Uptake of nutrients by higher plants largely occurs via the roots. Soil-root interactions play an important role in agricultural cropping systems. Growing roots explore all solid, liquid and gas phases of soil for mineral nutrients, creating depletion zones in the rhizosphere. They can also release inorganic and organic compounds affecting numerous soil parameters and nutrient mobility in the adjacent soil. Understanding of rhizosphere mechanisms will help to optimise them and improve soil and plant management in sustainable agriculture.
