Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) for monitoring bioavailable contaminant stripping (BCS) by the As hyperaccumulator Pteris vitata L.
Original language description
Phytoextraction technology makes use of hyperaccumulator plants which extracts pollutants from soil and accumulate them in the harvestable above ground biomass. However, only recently the first As hyperaccumulators were discovered, all belonging to the Pteridaceae. The concept of "Bioavailable Contaminant Stripping" aims at removing only the phytoavailable metal/metalloid fraction. To monitore efficiency and longevity of the remedial action with respect to pollutant bioavailability, the technique of "Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films" was tested. Pteris vitata plants were grown in plots using Calcaric Cambisol soil from profile 0-20 cm. DGT induces fluxes and common soil chemical parameters were assessed in bulk in rhizosphere soil. The difference between extractable labile As in bulk and rhizosphere soil accounted only for 8.9 % of total As accumulated in the fern, indicating that As was mainly acquired from less available pools.
