Improvement of Nitrogen Removal in WWTP by Nitritation/Denitritation of the Sludge Liquor
Original language description
The sludge liquor, which is commonly returned to activated sludge process in WWTP, brings high amount of ammonia there. Nitrogen can be efficiently removed from the sludge liquor before it is rejected in to the main wastewater treatment line. The ammoniaremoval from the sludge liquor helps to lower inorganic nitrogen concentrations in the WWTP effluent. The specific character of the sludge liquor enables the application of nitritation/denitritation method for separate biological treatment. The nitritation/denitritation method was tested in laboratory scale. The efficient oxidation of N-NH4+ to nitrite was achieved at a minimal nitrate production. The tests proved that it is possible to operate the nitritation/denitritation process at very high nitrogen loading rate. There are two operational alternatives of sludge liquor treatment by nitritation/denitritation method: without pH control (lower operational costs and N-removal up to 70 %) or with pH control (higher operational costs and
