Further evidence for male infanticide and feticide in captive plains zebra, Equus burchelli

  • Original language description

Equus burchelli is characterised by high incidence of male infanticide and feticide, particularly with introducing a new male into a herd. The authors used 9 zebra herds from 4 Czech zoos and the results we compared to previous study on this topic. Bothof the statistical models they tested were significant. Death probability of foals in the presence of the new male, especially with its introducing just after conception, was nearly 100%, during the first month of age and then decreased. However, the foal´s probability to die was neither affected by the zoo nor the subspecies. The authors also describe the 4 cases of male feticide.
