The influence of root diameter on the nitrogen content in the root biomass of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.)
Original language description
The aim of this work was to assess the influence of root morphology on the nitrogen content in the root system of lucerne when taking stand density and soil compaction into account. The trial was conducted in 2004 with sampling in the spring and autumn period. The relationship between nitrogen content and period, stand density, soil compaction, root diameter, root weight and tap-root percentage ratio were evaluated. Decreasing diameter and lateral roots were significantly negatively correlated with N content. Total N amount in lucerne root per m-2 was positively correlated with stand density and negatively with tap-root percentage ratio. The soil compaction reduced significantly the weight of roots, plant density, N content, and total N amount. Distribution of root biomass and soil condition has a significant influence on the nitrogen content in the root biomass of lucerne.
