Ozonization of soils contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls

  • Original language description

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are one of the most stable organic pollutants. Oxidation by strong oxidation agents such as ozone could be low cost and environmentally friendly remediation methods. The aims of this laboratory experiment were to investigate the effectiveness of ozone on a degradation of individual PCB congeners presented in soils and to consider the influence of different physical and chemical soil characteristics on its degradation. Results showed that concentration of PCBs in all tested soils was reduced after ozonation. The highest decrease of total PCB was found in Fluvisols with lower soil organic matter content which implies a substantial effect of soil characteristics on a rate of PCB degradation.
