Antimicrobial effect of selected essential oils against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

  • Original language description

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is bacterium, which is a big problem in hospitals in patients with postoperative complications and after transplantations (1). We tested these bacteria, because S. aureus is one of the most sensitive bacterium to the essential oils (2). The aim of this study was to identify antimicrobial properties of the 8 essential oils in vapor phase against 6 strains of MRSA, which were obtained from two hospitals, and one standard strain of methicilin susceptible S. aureus ATCC (MSSA). The essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation. The tests of antimicrobial properties were carried out by the modified diffusion method for testing of essential oils in vapour phase (3). At first, MSSA was tested in concentrations 0,0083 - 0,53 ?l/cm3 of air, then MRSA were tested in the minimum inhibitory concentration of MSSA and in one lower and two higher concentrations. The best results were shown by horse-radish (Armoracia rusticana, MIC 0,0083 ?l/cm3
