Occurrence of bifidobacteria in faeces of calves fed milk or a combined diet.
Original language description
Development of faecal bacteria composition of calf fed on milk or a combined diet was investigated. Bacteria were enumerated by cultivation in calves aged 4 to 21 days. Bifidobacteria were also detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In 4-day-old calves bifidobacterial levels in both groups were very similar (7.61 in milk-fed calves and 7.74 in calves fed the combined diet, detected by FISH), in 7 day-old calves an influence of diet composition on faecal bacteria was observed. Bifidobacteria in milk-fed calves rapidly increased to 9.13 log CFU/g (determined by FISH) and did not change to the end of the study. In calves fed the combined diet bifidobacteria also increased, but only to 7.69 log CFU/g (determined by FISH) and then slowly decreased. Bifidobacteria dominated the faecal bacteria of calves on milk diet. Coliforms dominated in calves on the combined diet, bifidobacteria constituted only a minor group and were significantly (P < 0.01) lower compared to those in mi
