Use of competition index to compare of weed competitive ability among czech alfalfa germplasm in the seeding year

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the weed competitive ability of Czech alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties and candivars in the seeding year. To assess the competitive ability, an experiment was conducted in 2006 with 15 alfalfagermplasms in completely randomised blocks. The measurement and sampling was repeatedly realized in two cuts with eight replicates per each alfalfa germplasm. The weight weed ratio, stand density, number of stems per plant, and alfalfa dry matter yieldwas assessed by each sample. The competitive ability among germplasms was evaluated as a competition index (CI) which was transformed to lie on a scale of 9.0 (highest) to 1.0 (lowest competitive ability). The CI values for a 30 % weed ratio ranged from5.0 to 8.5 among germplasms in the first cut. This showed that the approach of using a competition index to characterize variety competitive ability is possible. This approach may be suitable for the screening of varieties. In addition, t
