Original language description
A large family of Calyptrate Brachycera with nearly 600 European species (Pont 2007), of which 250 have been recorded from Slovakia (Gregor & Rozkošný 2006). Adults are small to large (2-18 mm), black to yellow, rarely metallic blue to green. Meron without a row of strong setae (except genus Eginia), however, sometimes with several hair-like setae; anal vein (A1+CuA2) incomplete, scutellum typically without small hair-like setae on underside, or (when present) katepisternal setae not arranged in equilateral triangle. Adult muscids often occur in woods and are nectarophagous, haematophagous, secretophagous or even predatory.
