Naturally occurring prebiotic oligosaccharides in poultry feed mixtures
Original language description
Three commercially available chicken feed mixtures were tested for the presence of RSO using enzymatic method. All feed mixtures contained RSO at a concentration from 2.1 to 2.2 %. Soya meal was identified as the exclusive source of RSO. Subsequently, the bifididogenic effect of stachyose (main soya bean RSO) on the growth of poultry intestinal bifidobacteria was tested. Bifidobacteria were counted in chicken intestinal tract using cultivation and FISH methods. Four out of 6 bifidobacterial strains tested grew significantly (P < 0.05) better on stachyose compared to glucose. It could be concluded that chicken feed mixtures naturally contained prebiotic oligosaccharides that are presented in the form of RSO at higher levels (more than 2%) compared to concentration (usually up to 1%) recommended for artificially added prebiotics. Our results indicate that there is no reason for the supplementation of chicken feed mixtures with prebiotics with bifidogenic properties
