Chapter 17. Quality and Selected Metals Content of Spring Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Grain and Biomass after the Treatment with Brassinosteroids during Cultivation

  • Original language description

The aim of this work was to evaluate the ability of treatment with selected brassinosteroids to lessen the uptake and accumulation of four heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu) in spring wheat plants cultivated in a contaminated soil from a polluted area andto assess the effect of treatment on other quality and yield parameters. After the treatment of plants with brassinosteroids a decrease in heavy metals content was observed in the growth stage 73-75 DC, i.e. during the period when the plants are harvested for ensilage purposes. The content of metals (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn and Zn), yield and quality parameters of wheat grain were determined. The achieved results showed that utilization of brassinosteroids for plant treatment effectively decreased contentof cadmium, lead, copper and zinc, respectively in wheat plants and harvested grain in plants cultivated in a contaminated soil from a polluted area and diminished in such way the input of these contaminants into the food chain.
