First report of Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus, Watermelon mosaic virus, and Zucchini yellow mosaic virus infecting zucchini plants in Libya

  • Original language description

Field-grown zucchini plants (Cucurbita pepo L. convar. giromontiina Grebenščikov) with viral symptoms including leaf yellowing, yellow mosaic, deformation of leaves and fruits, and stunting were found in the region of Fezzan near the town of Sabha, district Sabha, Libya in 2012. The prevalent symptom on the inspected plants was yellow mosaic. Six symptomatic leaf samples were taken and examined for the presence of Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus (CABYV), Cucumber mosaic virus, Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus, Melon necrotic spot virus, Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus, Papaya ring spot virus, Squash mosaic virus, Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV), Zucchini yellow fleck virus, and Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) by double antibody sandwich (DAS)-ELISA. Positive reaction was obtained for all six samples with CABYV, two with WMV, and five with ZYMV. All of the samples were infected with two or three of the detected viruses simultaneously. The ELISA findings were confirmed by RT-PCR.
