Potatoes – applied technologies in organic potato growing
Original language description
Continuous research has been conducted at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. New organic potato growing technologies have been developed there. We have been looking for answers to current issues and questions organic potato farmers had recently. We have aimed at assessing possibilities and impacts of mulch use in potato growing, if mulch was applied on the surface of potato ridges, it influenced the soil temperature (it increased it by 0,2 to 0,6 degrees Celsius, if black mulch textile was used, it decreased it by 0,5 to 0,8 degrees Celsius, if grass mulch was used), and soil sucking pressure (grass mulch increased it by 10 kPa and soil moisture decreased, mulch textile did not change dramatically the sucking pressure). Mulch helped reduce weeds, weed rate was 20 percent lower, if grass mulch was used, and it was 92 percent lower if mulch textile was used. Application of mulch to the surface of potato ridges reduces the amount of surface (erosion) soil washed off. Our research has focused
