Are the state subsidies for the Breeding Program of the Czech Warmblood Horses effective?
Original language description
In the long term, modern trends in breeding sport-horses require a transition to lighter-types selected for specific features enabling longer-term sports careers. The Czech-Warmblood Breeders Association (Svaz chovatelů českého teplokrevníka) created a system for increasing the quality of breeding stock through subsidies to breeders and owners of horses selected from the Czech Warmblood breed through competitions known as Criterion of Young Horses. This study analyzes the benefits of 313 horses who have achieved positions subsidized by the Young Horse Criteria during 1993-2013 in Czech breeding. From 6 to 26 horses were qualified each year. Only 42,86 % of these horses were used for breeding purposes in the Czech Republic. The number of offspring ranged from 0 to 125 for top stallions. Since 2007 the number of descendants of evaluated horses has been decreasing significantly. These differences may indicate the need to revise the breeding program for sport horses in the Czech Republic.
