Neglected “Wolf of Wall Street – Sell me this pen” strategy in aquaponics. Fish and plant species diversity in aquaponics systems in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Aquaponics is considered a promising food production technology, alternative to a traditional agriculture production when water is a scarce commodity. Aquaponics combines mainly fish aquaculture and hydroponic technology of growing plants. Several fish species and over 150 plant species were tested and proved to grow well in aquaponics. There are many emerging aquaponic companies in Europe. Many start-ups have failed because the profits from fish and plant production did not meet the demands of the initial investment plan. Here we show that the most frequently kept species in aquaponic systems in the Czech Republic are carps (Cyprinus sp.), followed by warm-water tilapias (Oreochromis sp., Tilapia sp.), sturgeons (Acipenser sp.), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and trouts (Oncorhynchus sp.). The most frequent plant was lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Aquaponics is a technically demanding system with high investment and operational costs, which should be compensated by high-value fish and
