Revision of the types of the genus Rhamphomyia species (Diptera, Empididae) described by R. Frey from the collection of the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg
Original language description
The genus Rhamphomyia Meigen is one of the three mega diverse groups of Empididae (dance flies, balloon flies), alongside the genera Empis Linnaeus and Hilara Meigen. Almost 600 species, distributed mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, have been described worldwide, but approximately the same number of species await description. Richard Karl Hjalmar Frey, the noted Finnish dipterist (Hackman 1965), worked on many families of Diptera, but Empididae was probably one of his groups of special interest. Among empidids, Frey studied extensively Rhamphomyia, for which he suggested the original subgeneric classification and described 119 (98 valid) new species from the Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. Our paper includes a list of 36 Rhamphomyia species described by R. Frey from the collection of the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. Label data, lectotype designations when necessary, type localities, and habitus photos are provided for 30 species.
