Tensile characteristics of epoxy/jute biocomposites prepared by vacuum infusion

  • Original language description

Developmental trends in composite systems include substitution of synthetic fillers by renewable sources. Prospective renewable sources usable in the field of composite systems can be denoted natural plant fibers. The paper describes a composite system prepared by a vacuum infusion. As a matrix was used an epoxy resin which was filled with arranged and randomly oriented short jute fibers in the form of yarn residues of a length 42,63 mm. The tensile strength and strain at break of these composites are described experimentally without surface treatment of the fibers. Electron microscopy was used to describe the interfacial interaction. The short fibers, which were oriented in the direction of the load force, increased the tensile strength by 11 MPa versus the non-filled resin, the non-oriented fibers reduced the tensile strength of 7 MPa.
