Impact of defoliation caused by saw web sawfly Cephalcia lariciphila (Hymenoptera: Pamphilidae) on radila growth of larch (Larix decidua Mill.)

  • Original language description

Repeated local outbreak of Cephalcia lariciphila (WACHTL, 1898) has occurred around the village of Větrný Jeníkov (Českomoravská vrchovina upland) in the period of 2000 - 2002. Impact of defoliation, caused by C. lariciphila feeding, on tree-ring formation of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) was studied using dendrochronological methods. Heavy defoliation resulted in a deep growth depression in the years of insect attack; the average increment loss was 67%. in average. Also The anatomical propertiesof latewood have changed ? fewer cells were formed and cell-wall thickness was reduced. The year 1996 was is a distinct strong growth minimum for the study set of larch trees damaged by insect feeding in the 2000 ? 2002 period. With respect to the factthat As the increments of the control trees set did not significantly decrease, the climatic factor can be excluded. It may be concluded thus seems to be probable, that 1996 was the first year of C. lariciphila attack, which also correspo
