Selected properties of rapeseed based composites
Original language description
Composites based on annual plants can be used as a good alternative to wood-based ones because of their ecological properties and low price. Winter rapeseed is such a material. Our goal was to prepare such boards and evaluate their properties. The potential of this material in Europe is very high. Millions of tons are produced, and they are usually not processed. We used unmodified raw material and chemically and hydrothermally modified rapeseed chips glued by powder polyester glue. The measured characteristics were internal bonding, swelling over time and surface soundness. The results show that the modification of the raw material influences the properties of the resulting composites. The modification of the particles in an alkaline environment resulted in a stronger adhesive bond between the particle and the adhesive. During an internal bonding test, boards made from these particles exhibited cohesive failures in the particle. The modification of the particles therefore increased the mechanical properties of the boards, but the physical properties deteriorated.
