Effect of different regeneration methods and site on selected wood properties of scot pine
Original language description
Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), together with Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karsten), ranks among the most important commercial coniferous tree species in the Czech Republic. With the increasing biotic and abiotic damages to spruce forests, the importance of Scots pine will be increasing. However, we have realised that we know very little about wood properties of this tree species in the conditions of Czech Republic. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of site and silvicultural treatment on the selected properties of the Scots pine wood in the Doksy (PLO 18) locality that is representative area for Scots pine in the Czech Republic territory. Sample trees were selected from three stands representing two variants of the silvicultural treatment of Scots pine, i.e. a clear-cutting and shelterwood regeneration method, and representing two different sites. We tested impact bending strength and wood density. Although both studied characteristics of wood obtained higher values for the shelterwood regeneration method, the effect of the silvicultural treatment did not appear to be statistically significant. The influence of silvicultural treatment was more noticeable on the observed characteristics in the horizontal direction within the trunk. Shelterwood method indicates a uniform distribution of impact bending strength and density along the radius of the trunk. From a qualitative point of view, the part of the trunk the wood comes from is therefore not essential for the final wood processing. On the other hand, the clear-cutting method indicates a clear trend in terms of increase the examined characteristics from the pith to the cambium. The impact of the site was confirmed only for wood density, impact bending strength was not affected by the site. ISBN: 978-605-245-736-8; Název sborníku: 1.
