Bending characteristics of fiber-reinforced composite with plywood balsa core

  • Original language description

The purpose of the research was to evaluate the bending characteristics of sandwich composite material based on balsa plywood reinforced with flax and glass fibers with epoxy resin. For manufactured composites with a thickness of 12 mm, the basic physical properties were determined and a mechanical three-point bending test according to EN 310 was carried out. Reinforcement of the balsa plywood with both types of fibers significantly increased the modulus of elasticity and bending strength. However, there are significant differences between both types of fibers. Whilst for flax fibers the flexural modulus was 7,5% higher than for glass fibers, the bending strength values of glass fibers were 26,5% lower compared to flax fibers. The experiment confirmed that in the production of composites, flax fibers with less of an environmental impact may be a material that is used as an adequate replacement of glass fibers.
