The paper addresses the issue of expressing the socio-economic importance of forest ecosystem services from the theoretical and practical points of view, using the example of the Czech Republic (CR). The necessity to express the importance of forest services (functions) in monetary form is spurred by conflicts of interest between various parts of society over the optimal extent of the use of environmental resources in the landscape, the forest being among the crucial ones.The expression of the socio-economicimportance, or value, of forest services in monetary form can provide a basis for decision-making on the use of environmental resources in the landscape for society. It can also contribute to a rational settlement of the conflict between the market (production) and non-market non-production)roles of natural resources with an emphasis on forests, for the management of forests in terms of sustainable life in rural areas and within society in general.
