Balancing resolution and accessibility: Responding to Korznikov and Altman (2024) on forest disturbance assessment

  • Original language description

Our study Balancing Resolution and Accessibility: Responding to Korznikov and Altman (2024) on Forest Disturbance Assessment, evaluates the utility of mediumresolution satellite imagery (e.g., Sentinel-2, Landsat 8 and 9) for assessing forest disturbances, specifically windthrows and bark beetle mortality. While acknowledging the precision of high-resolution imagery in identifying crown-level disturbances, we emphasise the practical value of medium-resolution imagery due to its free availability, broad temporal coverage and satisfactory spatial resolution for landscape-level analysis. This approach is defended against criticism that it underestimates disturbance in mixed forests, highlighting the balance between resolution, accessibility and practicality for widespread forest management applications.
