PostCont: A technological system for the production of planting stock intended for environmentally unfavourable or specific sites
Original language description
The contribution introduces the PostCont device, developed within a project funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic. The PostCont is a semi-automatic machine designed to encapsulate the roots of bare-rooted planting stock into paper pots and a growth medium. The production of these containers is integral to the process, utilizing water and secondary raw materials such as cardboard and waste paper, while also recycling surplus water extracted during containerization. PostCont plants represent a transitional form between bare-rooted and standard container stock. Their roots grow freely without deformities through the paper pot walls. The technology enhances resilience against stressors like drought and poor soil conditions. While PostCont plants share similarities with standard container stock, which generally have higher survival rates, PostCont technology requires less irrigation water, fertilizers, and pesticides. This efficiency stems from the fact that bare-rooted plants are cultivated in mineral outdoor nursery beds before undergoing containerization. The semi-automatic root encapsulation process provides a faster alternative to manual transplanting. The PostCont device is capable of containerization of planting stock into paper pots of various sizes. Compact and transportable, it can operate wherever there is access to water and an electricity grid. Primarily developed for small nurseries specializing in bare-rooted stock, this technology enables containerization, ensuring that seedlings are better suited for harsh planting conditions. Thus, the PostCont technology can be effectively utilized in revegetation projects as part of land reclamation or for biological soil improvement on degraded lands.
