This paper presents a new methodology for visual interpretation and classification of aerial photographs for the purpose of evaluating landscape structure and development, as well as the first results of this classification within the CzechTerra landscape inventory system. The primary elements of the system are 1599 localities of 450 x 450 m, distributed throughout the area of the Czech Republic along a regular network of 7 x 7 km squares (the centre of each locality is a point randomly placed within each square). The methodology is based on assigning attributes to the centre points of a square network with 10 m resolution, covering the localities. We have developed special tools within the Field-Map system to facilitate implementation of the methodology.
