Current state of Bd occurrence in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Chytridiomycosis, a relatively new amphibian disease caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) (Berger et al. 1998; Longcore et al. 1999), is recognized as a global threat to amphibian biodiversity. Bd is the only known chytrid species pathogenic to vertebrates (Williams et al. 2002). It is considered to be a newly emerged clone that was distributed around the globe (Morehouse et al. 2003) by human activities (Weldon et al. 2004). Current research focuses on isolating and exploring the genetic diversity of Bd lineages (Kilpatrick et al. 2010; Fisher et al. 2009a; Goka et al. 2009; Morehouse et al. 2003), assessing the impact on amphibians in terms of synergic effects of climate (Bosch et al. 2007), weather, cutaneous peptides, pesticides, and different virulence of Bd lineages (reviewed in Kilpatrick 2010), as well as surveillance of the pathogen?s distribution in unexplored regions and species (Frías?Alvarez et al. 2008; www.bd-maps.net). The presence of Bd has
