Wetlands constructed for wastewater treatment and control

  • Original language description

Constructed wetlands have been used for wastewater treatment for more than four decades. Originally, constructed wetlands were used to treat municipal sewage but recently, thea have been used to treat many types of wastewater including industrial and agricultural wastewaters, stormwater runoff or landfill leachate. There are also many types of constructed wetlands which differ in flow direction (horizontal and vertical flow), presence or absence of water on the surface (subsurface and surface flows) ortypes of macrophytes used. The technology of wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands started in Germany, however, the techology has spread to all continents since then. Constructed wetlands are considered as viable treatment technology with treatment performance similar to conventional treatment systems.
