A New, Harmless Mesocosm Design for Field Rearing Ranid Embryos and Determining Clutch Sizes
Original language description
We present a new, simple device that was evolved and tested during studies on the Agile Frog Rana dalmatina at the North Bohemian brown coal basin in the Czech Republic that allows counting frog eggs in the field without harmful impact to clutches. The device is positioned around a clutch and consists of a floating polystyrene ring placed inside fine elastic netting. The device was tested on 193 Rana dalmatina egg masses during two breeding seasons, in 2007 (N = 80) and in 2010 (N = 113. The method is particularly suitable for ranid frogs. The main advantages of the method are its reasonable accuracy and simultaneously its relatively non-invasive handling of amphibian clutches.
