The role of land market and contextual characteristics in shaping farmland abandonment patterns in the post-Soviet Armenia
Original language description
In the face of growing competition and demand for land resources, available abandoned farmlands allow to reset “land-use clocks” and provide various land-use opportunities, including recultivation, options for rewilding, and other alternatives to agricultural land uses. Thus, it is important to understand the patterns and drivers of farmland abandonment. The role of land markets, among other potential drivers, may shape agricultural production and cause temporary or permanent farmland abandonment. By using the example of post-Soviet Armenia, this study aims to evaluate the role of land markets, land tenure, and contextual factors in the relationship to farmland abandonment. Through the case study of the Armavir province of Armenia, we examine the extent, temporal and spatial aspects of farmland abandonment, its relationship with farm structures, farmer individual characteristics, land market intentions, household and land parcel characteristics. Based on the analysis of structural surveys with logistic regressions, the results revealed an important connection between farmland abandonment and land market behavioural intentions. Specifically, landowners willing to lease out and sell their lands are more likely to leave farmland abandoned. Furthermore, the study provides evidence of other risk factors leading to farmland abandonment, such as the aging of farmers, a lack of successors to continue farming. Small-scale, fragmented farm structures and the absence of irrigation increase in the likelihood of farmland abandonment, along with weak agricultural land markets and a lack of efficient land-use policies. Therefore, this study recommends designing an integrated policy response distinguishing between country-wide and project-based interventions aimed at improving farm structures, promoting off-farm income, creating new job opportunities in rural areas, and improving the functioning of the agricultural land markets.
