Predation by Henst's Goshawk (Accipiter henstii) on an Infant Indri (Indri indri)
Original language description
Predation is widely considered a major selective pressure on primate behaviour and ecology (Stanford, 2002) and plays a crucial role in the evolution of lemur behaviour ecology and population dynamics (Goodman & Ganzhorn, 2022). However, predation is rarely observed for many primate species (Fichtel, 2012). For lemurs, most predation records involve smaller-bodied species (i.e., Microcebus spp.) (Goodman et al., 1993; Goodman & Ganzhorn, 2022). However, Henst’s goshawk is known to prey on black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) and red-fronted lemurs (Eulemur rufifrons) in Ranomafana National Park in southeastern Madagascar, and diurnal birds of prey, such as Henst’s goshawk feed on nocturnal greater dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus major) (Goodman & Ganzhorn, 2022). In the case of the largest extant lemur, the Critically Endangered indri (Indri indri), an observation of a group responding with what was interpreted as an antipredator call towards the Madagascar harrier hawk (Polyboroides radiatus) was reported in the Analamazaotra protected area (Andasibe, eastern Madagascar) 30 years ago (Goodman et al., 1993). However, there are no published observations of a direct attack on an indri by a predator.
