Tree ring chemistry and changes in acid deposition in two watersheds in the Bohemian Forest (Czech Republic)
Original language description
There is a wide spread evidence that acid deposition (S and N) may deplete available base cation pools in soils to the extent that forest health may be impaired (Watmough and Dillon 2003). We have analyzed historical changes in S and N depositions and chemical composition of Norway spruce tree rings in two mountain watersheds (Plešné and Čertovo Lakes, the Bohemian Forest). Tree rings (sectioned by decades) were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Al, C, N, Mn, and isotopic composition (13C, 15N), and trends from thebeginning of 20th century were evaluated. Trends in S and N depositions came from Kopáček et al. (2001). Tree ring chemistry exhibited changes in concentrations and molar ratios of the selected elements. The Ca:Al and (Ca+Mg):Al ratios significantly decreased for all four sampled trees over the 20th century (Fig 1). In general, Mg and Ca concentrations decreased and Al concentrations increased throughout the last century. However, the variability in the data was high (especially for Ca a
