Specifics of landscape structure development in Sokolov basin

The Sokolov brown coal basin is situated in North-West Bohemia (Czech Republic), near the German border. The whole area of the basin (219 km2) is directly affected by opencast mining. The face of the land in this area was transformed dramatically in recent decades. Using GIS tools, the maps and aerial photographs of this area were interpreted for their land uses in two periods of time (around the years of 1842 and 1998). Then these attributes of landscape structure were analyzed and calculated: landscape matrix characteristics, land-use characteristics and characteristics of interaction between matrix and landscape elements (edge density, index of landscape heterogeneity). The results show a huge decrease in landscape heterogeneity during the studied period. Each of the main attributes confirms this undesirable development, owing mainly to the increase in average field area and in the total area of coal mines.
