  • Original language description

In the Middle Ages, a pluzina was a village's economical background, in other words, the sum of all its fields, meadows, pastures and the road system interconnecting these. Today, remnants of these pluzinas are visible where the strips of woody vegetation which divided the individual fields are preserved. These hedges fulfill many important functions in the landscape, both ecological and aesthetic, but are currently endangered by modern agricultural methods and by land consolidation processes. Therefore, the research and conservation of these historical landscape structures is a very pressing topic. For the effective protection of pluzinas, it is necessary to make an inventory of these and to establish which ones are the most valuable, i.e. the ones best preserved, most representative or, on the other hand, most unique in their particular area. The object of this study was meeting these goals in the Plzen Region.
